Bayer acquires Roundup (2018)

Bayer completed the acquisition of Roundup on 7 June 2018 for $63 billion, buying from Monsanto.^[1]

Bayer acquired Monsanto for $128 per share in cash, creating the largest agricultural inputs company in the world. Regulators required Bayer to sell substantial seed and crop protection assets to BASF. The deal brought Bayer the Roundup brand and the glyphosate litigation attached to it, which has since cost it many billions in settlements.

Cleared with remedies 29 May 2018

The Department of Justice allowed Bayer to acquire Monsanto only after requiring the divestiture of about $9 billion of businesses to BASF, which the Department described at the time as the largest merger divestiture it had ever obtained. Bayer subsequently faced very large liabilities from Monsanto's glyphosate litigation.
