Small samples swing widely: countries with fewer than 50 brands in the table rest on a handful of brands, so read their rank loosely.
How this is computed
A brand counts as foreign-owned when its current controlling owner, followed up through controlling subsidiaries to the ultimate parent, has its headquarters in a country other than the brand's country of origin. Controlling means outright ownership or a stake of 50% or more, with no territorial limit. Brands that are only licensed, only part-owned or have no current owner on record are left out of the denominator, not counted as domestic. A country is listed when at least 15 of its brands have a controlling owner. Data as of .
Coverage caveat. Brandtree adds brands mainly through the filings of large listed groups, so its sample over-represents brands that were bought by multinationals and under-represents small, independent domestic brands. These shares describe the brands tracked here, not every brand in a country. Headquarters is the country of the owner's registered head office, so a group moved for tax reasons shows as foreign.
