United States District Court for the Northern District of California: how it reviews brand acquisitions

Federal district courts decide merger challenges brought under the Clayton Act. A court can temporarily restrain or preliminarily enjoin a deal from closing while a case proceeds and, after a trial, permanently block it. Its orders are recorded here because in a litigated challenge the court, not the agency or the plaintiff, is the body whose decision determines whether a deal can close.
