It began in 1994 as a games importer set up by two school friends, Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński, who sold CD-ROMs at a Warsaw computer bazaar, and it opened its own development studio in 2002. Listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange in the WIG20 index, it reported 867 million zloty of consolidated sales and 594 million zloty of net profit in 2025, and had sold more than 120 million copies of its games by the end of that year. It sold GOG, the DRM-free games store it had run for over seventeen years, to Michał Kiciński in a deal announced on 29 December 2025, and the parent company formally took the name CD PROJEKT RED S.A. on 10 August 2026.
