Obolon is the largest Ukrainian-owned beverage producer, built around a Kyiv brewery commissioned in 1980 ahead of the Moscow Olympics, designed by Czech engineers and sited for its reserves of soft water; it took the name of the surrounding Kyiv district in 1986. Staff took a capital lease on the enterprise in 1990 and it received privatisation certificate number one from the State Property Fund of Ukraine in 1992, making it the first private enterprise of independent Ukraine. The corporation today runs the main plant, two separate production units, two subsidiaries and four enterprises with corporate rights — three breweries, three plants for soft drinks, low-alcohol drinks and mineral water, and its own malting plant at Chemerivtsi — and employs about 4,000 people. It says its beer is known in more than 70 countries.
