Biscuiterie H. Rault is a family-run cassava-biscuit maker in Mahébourg, Mauritius, now in its fifth generation under the Rault-Sénèque family. Its own website recounts that cassava, introduced to the island around 1735 mainly as cattle feed, became a food product when Hilarion Rault developed a biscuit recipe from it in 1868 and commercially launched "Biscuits Manioc" in 1870, winning a silver medal at the 1908 London Franco-British Exhibition. The factory tripled production to help feed the island during the First World War, survived Cyclone Carol in 1960 and Cyclone Gervaise in the late 1970s, and has run public tastings and factory visits since 1995 while still making the biscuits by hand to the original recipe.
