It began on 7 March 1947 as Hankyu Department Stores, Inc., spun off from the railway company that had opened the Hankyu store in Umeda in 1929, and took the H2O Retailing name in October 2007 when it integrated Hanshin Department Store. It is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime market as 8242. For the year to March 2026 it reported net sales of ¥680.2 billion and gross sales of ¥1,162.4 billion. Hanshin Electric Railway (12.83%) and Hankyu Hanshin Holdings (7.25%) are among its largest shareholders.
