King Car is a privately held Taiwanese conglomerate that began in insecticide manufacturing before expanding into food and beverages, flowers, aquaculture and biotechnology. Its own account of its history opens its first beverage plant in Zhongli in 1979 under the Root Beer name, and the group has since built two of Taiwan's best-known drinks brands from that base: Mr. Brown Coffee, the country's leading bottled coffee, and Kavalan, Taiwan's first whisky distillery and now an internationally awarded single malt producer. It also runs Mr. Brown branded cafés, an orchid garden and biotech and diagnostics units in Yilan County.
