Pronaca is Ecuador's largest food company and still a family business. Its history runs from 1954, when Lodewijk Jan Bakker wrote to his son Luis inviting him into Ecuador's food sector, through the founding of India in central Quito in 1957 and the start of poultry and egg production at Hacienda La Estancia in 1958, to the constitution of Procesadora Nacional de Alimentos C.A. under the Pronaca name in 1979. It moved outwards from chickens in steps that are still visible in the portfolio: eggs in 1974, turkey in 1980, culinary products in 1986, pork in 1992, frozen prepared food in 1997, pet food in 2000 and tilapia in 2002. It runs industrial plants at Bucay, Pifo, Durán and elsewhere, an animal nutrition and genetics division, a palm-heart export business, operations in Panama and a pet food research centre it says was the first in Latin America.
