Its roots are in 1930, when Rakhmat Sulistio began formulating the remedy that became Tolak Angin; she and her husband Siem Thiam Hie opened the jamu business called Sido Muncul, meaning "wish come true", in Semarang in 1951. It listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange on 18 December 2013. The company says it has more than 4,000 employees and more than 300 products, bought the pharmaceutical maker Berlico Mulia Farma on 1 September 2014, and set up Muncul Nigeria Limited in January 2018.
