Marriott acquires Sheraton and 3 other brands (2016)

Marriott completed the acquisition of Sheraton and 3 other brands on 23 September 2016 for $13 billion.[1]

Marriott acquired Starwood Hotels & Resorts for about $13 billion, creating the largest hotel company in the world with around thirty brands. A rival Chinese-led bid pushed the price up during the process before being withdrawn.

A data breach in the Starwood reservation system, disclosed in 2018 and dating from before the acquisition, led to a fine from the UK Information Commissioner.
