Arçelik is a Turkish appliance manufacturer that owns most of the household names in European white goods without being one itself. It says it operates in 57 countries with 22 brands, among them the German Grundig, Blomberg and Bauknecht, the Romanian Arctic, the British Leisure, the South African Defy and the Pakistani Dawlance. In April 2024 it renamed its global operations under the Beko brand, though the listed company is still Arçelik A.Ş. on Borsa Istanbul, and took control of Whirlpool's European appliance business through a new company called Beko Europe.
Whirlpool contributed its European major domestic appliance business into a new company with Arcelik called Beko Europe, keeping a 25 per cent interest in it, and separately sold its Middle East and North Africa business to the same buyer. The effect was to hand a Turkish manufacturer control of Indesit, Hotpoint in Europe and Bauknecht, and to move Whirlpool from owning a European business to licensing its own name back to the company that now runs one: it agreed a multi-year licence of the Whirlpool brand to Beko Europe for European sales.
