Brasserie Nationale d'Haïti calls itself the only brewery in the country and one of its largest beverage producers. It was founded in 1973 by Michael Madsen, a Haitian of Danish descent whose family had arrived in the late nineteenth century, and its first operations included the PepsiCo licence it still holds; the beer came three years later, when Prestige launched in 1976 at 4.2 per cent alcohol and was reformulated to 5.6 per cent in 1999. Heineken bought 22.5 per cent of the company in 1985 and announced on 14 December 2011 that it would take that holding to 95 per cent. The company works from Boulevard Toussaint Louverture in Port-au-Prince, and Heineken's 2025 annual report consolidates it while applying hyperinflation accounting to it, because the Haitian economy has been designated hyperinflationary since 2023.
