Heineken (AEX: HEIA) is a publicly listed company headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands that owns 11 consumer brands, and has 3 recorded transactions.[1]
Heineken was founded in Amsterdam in 1864 when Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought the Haystack brewery. It is the second-largest brewer in the world and remains family-influenced through Heineken Holding N.V.
Heineken took full ownership of the Californian craft brewer Lagunitas, having bought half in 2015. Craft brewers acquired by multinationals frequently lose shelf space in independent bottle shops as a result, a tension the sector still argues about.
Heineken acquired the beer operations of Mexico's FEMSA for about $7.6 billion in shares, taking Sol and Dos Equis. It gave Heineken a major position in Mexico and the United States Hispanic market without paying cash.
Heineken and Carlsberg bid jointly for Scottish & Newcastle at about GBP 7.8 billion and split it between them rather than one buying the whole company. Heineken took the British and Irish business including Strongbow, Carlsberg took the French and Russian operations including Kronenbourg. A joint bid to divide a target is unusual, and it is why two competing brewers date their ownership of these brands to the same day.
