Cervecería Centro Americana is Guatemala's oldest industrial company, founded in 1886 by the brothers Mariano and Rafael Castillo Córdova, who brought German brewmasters to the Finca El Zapote in Guatemala City to industrialise a trade that had been done by hand. It launched Gallo, still its leading beer, in 1896, bought the Cervecería Nacional de Quetzaltenango in 1929 and became a sociedad anónima in 1946. It remains controlled by the founding family, and alongside its own beers it sells Heineken, Bohemia, Tecate and Carta Blanca, which it brews or imports under licence rather than owns.
