Colonias Unidas is a multi-active agro-industrial co-operative based in Obligado, in the Itapúa department of southern Paraguay, and the most important co-operative in the country's south-east. It was founded by 78 farmers from Hohenau, Obligado and Bella Vista, who formed an organising committee on 16 November 1952, approved statutes at a constituent assembly on 8 March 1953 and were officially recognised on 21 April 1953 as the Sociedad Cooperativa Colonias Unidas Agrícola Limitada. It has roughly 4,000 active members and 1,800 permanent employees, rising to about 1,900 in harvest season. Its business units run the whole chain — technical assistance and inputs for members, then collection, industrial processing and sale of what they grow — across soy oil and pellets, dairy, yerba mate, seeds, animal feed, a supermarket and hypermarket, service stations, an agro-industrial laboratory and a prepaid medical service.
