Chortitzer is a multi-active co-operative of Mennonite farmers in Loma Plata, in the Paraguayan Chaco, and the largest dairy and beef business in the region. It was created by deed of 30 December 1961 as the Sociedad Cooperativa Colonizadora Chortitzer Komitee, received legal personality by Resolution No 32 of 7 June 1962 and is formally constituted from 1962. It serves about 7,017 members, to whom it supplies credit, supermarkets, cattle buying and selling, import and export, a balanced-feed mill, a dairy plant, an abattoir, workshops and dairy farms. Beyond food it runs an electricity utility that distributes power across the area, a 74-truck haulage fleet, seven service stations, a car lot and a machinery business, and since 1951 it has distilled Palo Santo essential oil — 120 tonnes a year — for the fine fragrance trade. It issues bonds on the Bolsa de Valores de Asunción, where its share capital is stated as 707.4 billion guaraníes.
