Demerara Distillers owns and operates the Diamond Distillery at Plantation Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara, the last distillery left in Guyana, and with it the wooden and metal stills carried over from estates that closed decades ago. It was incorporated on 17 November 1952 as Guyana Distilleries Limited and took its present name in 1983 on merging with Diamond Liquors Limited. It is the largest supplier of bulk rum and alcohol from the Caribbean to brand owners in Europe and North America, and from 1991 onwards deliberately turned itself from a commodity business into a branded one — first by using the carbon dioxide from distillation to enter soft drinks, then by launching El Dorado in 1992. It also runs distribution, shipping and technical services subsidiaries in Guyana and distribution companies in St Kitts, the United States and the Netherlands.
