Gobi is a Mongolian cashmere manufacturer established on 5 September 1981, when a goat cashmere and camel wool processing plant built under a Japanese government grant opened in Ulaanbaatar — the first factory of its kind in the country. It was reorganised as a joint stock company and listed on the Mongolian Stock Exchange in 1993, and passed entirely into private hands in 2007 when FCI LLC bought the state's 73.45 per cent through an international tender; Tavan Bogd Holdings LLC held 87.33 per cent of it at 31 March 2025. It employs around 1,700 people, more than seventy per cent of them women, spins its own yarn and knits, weaves and sews some 2.5 million finished pieces a year at its own factory, and sells them under five brands.
