NICOLAUS a.s. is Slovakia's largest producer and distributor of alcoholic beverages, headquartered in Liptovský Mikuláš where a distillery master, Armin Stark, founded the town's first private spirits refinery in 1867. The present joint-stock company was incorporated on 1 May 1992 and began vodka production in 1995; it now runs two liqueur factories, a distillery and a fruit distillery across plants in Liptovský Mikuláš and Leopoldov, Slovakia, and in Hungary, exporting to more than 20 markets in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. Alongside its own spirits it is the exclusive Slovak distributor of González Byass' Spanish brandy, gin and wine imports, which it sells but does not make.
