Zwack Unicum is the Budapest maker of Unicum and, by its own account, the largest company in the Hungarian branded spirits market, which accounts for nearly 90 per cent of its product revenue. The Zwack family's distillery, founded in 1840, was nationalised in 1948. Peter Zwack & Consorten set up the present company's predecessor in 1989 and in 1992 bought the state liqueur maker. The family holding company, owned by the Zwack and Underberg families, holds 50 per cent plus one share and Diageo 26 per cent, and Zwack is the sole distributor of Diageo spirits in Hungary.
