Dow Jones is owned by News Corp (the United States, NASDAQ: NWSA), which acquired the brand on 13 December 2007.[1][2] Dow Jones was founded in 1882 in the United States and was independent until 2007.
Dow Jones publishes the Wall Street Journal, Barron's and the market data business behind the Dow Jones Industrial Average, an index first calculated in 1896. News Corp acquired it in 2007 for about $5.6 billion. The index is price-weighted rather than weighted by company size, an approach economists consider outdated but which has kept it the most quoted market number in the world.
News Corporation acquired Dow Jones for about $5.6 billion, taking The Wall Street Journal after a contested approach to the Bancroft family that had controlled it for a century. The deal included commitments intended to protect the paper's editorial independence.
