Porsche is owned by Volkswagen Group (Germany, XETRA: VOW3), which acquired the brand on 1 August 2012.[1][2] Porsche was founded in 1931 in Stuttgart and was independent until 2012.
This ownership is reported in official statements but has not yet been matched to a regulatory filing.
Porsche and Volkswagen have an unusually tangled relationship: Porsche attempted to take over the much larger Volkswagen in 2008, failed, and was absorbed by it instead. The 911 has been in continuous production since 1964 with the engine still behind the rear axle.
Volkswagen completed the takeover of Porsche's car business for €4.46 billion, ending an unusual sequence in which Porsche had first tried to take over the far larger Volkswagen, accumulated enormous debt attempting it, and failed.
