Calbee is Japan's dominant snack maker, established on 30 April 1949 as Matsuo Food Processing and renamed in 1955 after a portmanteau of calcium and vitamin B1. It says it holds more than half of the Japanese snack market and the top share in cereal through Frugra. PepsiCo, through its wholly owned Frito-Lay Global Investments, is Calbee's largest shareholder with 21.41 per cent under a strategic alliance begun in 2009, which also made Japan Frito-Lay a Calbee subsidiary. Calbee has been listed in Tokyo since 2011 and operates in twelve countries and regions.
