Choppies is one of the largest retailers in southern Africa, holding what it calls a significant leading position in Botswana's retail sector, where it began in 1986 with a single shop in Lobatse called Wayside Supermarket. In the year to 30 June 2025 it ran 287 stores — 174 grocery, 85 liquor and 28 hardware — across Botswana, Namibia and Zambia, with seven distribution centres and 11,393 employees. It listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange in 2012 and took a secondary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 2015, then spent the following decade retreating from an over-extended expansion, leaving South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya and Tanzania in 2020 and selling its Zimbabwean business in 2025. Own-label accounts for 22 per cent of what it sells, supplied in part by milling, grain packaging and tissue operations it owns.
