S.M. Jaleel is one of the oldest and largest non-alcoholic beverage manufacturers in the English-speaking Caribbean, founded in Trinidad in 1924 by Sheikh Mohammed Jaleel and still family-controlled: his daughter Salaha Mohammed bought the failing business back into the family in 1975 and asked her son, Dr Aleem Mohammed, to abandon medicine to run it. He became chairman and chief executive in 1980 and moved the factory to the Otaheite Industrial Estate in South Trinidad, which remains the headquarters. The company pioneered PET bottling in the Caribbean in 1984, blows its own bottles directly from resin at roughly 18,000 an hour, and manufactures or distributes through subsidiaries in Barbados, Guyana, Suriname, St Lucia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and India. It marked its centenary in 2024.
