About Banana Republic

Banana Republic began in 1978 selling surplus safari and military clothing from a shop decorated like an expedition outpost, with a hand-drawn catalogue. Gap acquired it in 1983 and turned it into a conventional upmarket clothing chain. The founders left within a few years, unhappy that the travel and adventure theme had been stripped out of the business.
