CPL Group is Papua New Guinea's largest retailing network. Sir Mahesh Patel and the late Alan Jarvis opened a single shop called The Pharmacy at Garden City in Boroko, Port Moresby, in 1987 with four staff; the company listed on the Port Moresby Stock Exchange, bought the Stop & Shop supermarkets from Steamships Trading Company, and bought the Hardware Haus chain from the same seller four years after that. 2025 was the year it left the supermarket business: the sale of Stop & Shop to Taylor Pacific was concluded on 11 August 2025 after twenty years, and the group now describes itself as concentrating on health care, with hardware and a fashion joint venture alongside. It ended 2025 with 66 stores and 13 wellness clinics, revenue of K453.0 million against K500.5 million a year earlier, and profit before tax of K17.0 million after a K17.9 million loss in 2024, the year civil unrest in Port Moresby on 10 January cost it several stores and more than K90 million.
