East African Breweries is the largest drinks company in East Africa, built around Kenya Breweries, which was incorporated in 1922 and brewed its first beer that December. It took its present name in 1935 after buying Tanganyika Breweries, and today owns Kenya Breweries outright, Uganda Breweries at 98.2 per cent and Serengeti Breweries in Tanzania at 85 per cent, with shares listed in Nairobi and cross-listed in Kampala and Dar es Salaam. Its own corporate structure chart shows Diageo Kenya Limited holding 65 per cent of the company and public shareholders the other 35 per cent.
