Suriname Alcoholic Beverages is the Surinamese distiller behind Borgoe, established on 17 November 1966 as Surinaams Alcohol Bedrijf N.V. on the bank of the Suriname River and renamed in 2002 to reflect its growing export trade. Its rum heritage runs back further, to the Mariënburg sugar enterprise founded in the Commewijne district in 1882, which supplied it with molasses until the sugar factory closed in 1986; SAB built its own distillery in 1989 to keep Surinamese rum production going, automated bottling in 1999 and is building a new fermentation and distillation plant. It produces rum, vodka and other spirits from sugarcane molasses at Paramaribo, and Borgoe is a household name both in Suriname and among the Surinamese diaspora in the Netherlands.
