Scholastic licenses American publishing rights to Harry Potter, bought for $105,000 at auction in 1997 when the author was unknown. It does not own the books: Bloomsbury publishes them in Britain and the rights belong to the author, so the same series has different publishers on each side of the Atlantic. Scholastic also changed the first book's title for the American market, a decision the author has since said she regrets agreeing to.
