About Pandora
Pandora built its recommendations on the Music Genome Project, in which trained musicians catalogued songs by hundreds of attributes by hand. SiriusXM acquired it in 2019 for about $3.5 billion, after Spotify had taken most of its audience. The Music Genome Project took musicians roughly twenty minutes to analyse each song, an approach that could not scale the way collaborative filtering later did.
