Scandinavian Tobacco Group was formed on 1 October 2010 when Skandinavisk Holding A/S combined its tobacco business with the cigar and pipe tobacco business of Swedish Match (excluding Swedish Match's US mass-market cigars), creating what the companies called the world's second-largest cigar company; Skandinavisk Holding held 51% and Swedish Match 49% at formation. It is now listed on Nasdaq Copenhagen. Its wholly owned US subsidiary, General Cigar Company, headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, is the market leader in handmade cigars in the United States, and its own brand pages list Cohiba, Partagas and Hoyo de Monterrey among the US cigar names it makes and sells there — names that are unrelated in ownership to the Cuban originals sold worldwide by Habanos S.A.
