Hoyo de Monterrey in the United States is a Dominican- and Honduran-made cigar sold by General Cigar Company, a Scandinavian Tobacco Group subsidiary that names it among the brands it makes for the US market. It shares its name, but no ownership, with the Cuban-made Hoyo de Monterrey that Habanos S.A. sells everywhere else in the world. As with the rest of the Habanos portfolio, the split traces to the 1962 US trade embargo on Cuba, which shut Cuban cigars out of the American market and left a separate US business to use the same historic name.
