Which regulators the data covers
Five datasets from four agencies are archived. Recalls handled by any other regulator (for example EU, Canadian, Australian or FDA device and cosmetics notices) are not in the data, so a brand or owner with no recalls here may still have recalls elsewhere. Datasets differ in scope, so no total below is added across them as a single measure.

Recalls by ultimate owner, within each dataset
Top 10 owners per dataset, ranked by count of matched recalls and shown as counts only. Subsidiaries roll up to the ultimate owner as it stood on the recall date. "Via brand" means a recalled brand resolves to a controlled owner; "via firm" means only the recalling firm matched, which can be a contract manufacturer or a retailer's own-label supplier rather than the owner of the brand.
Only owners with at least 5 brands on Brandtree today and at least 5 brand-matched recalls in the dataset are shown; every other owner is omitted because a rate on fewer would swing on one recall. The rate is brand-matched recalls divided by the brands the owner holds today, within one dataset, so it is not comparable between datasets. Brands owned in the past are not in the denominator, and recalls are counted in the period the archive covers.

By classification

How this was computed
Recall records come from the archive of FDA food and drug enforcement reports, USDA FSIS recalls, UK FSA food alerts and CPSC recalls, as last fetched 2026-10-15. Only records the pipeline matched to a brand or company that exists on the site are counted (530 of 8,736).
Owner attribution follows controlling ownership (owned or at least 50%) up through subsidiaries to the ultimate owner on the recall date. 376 recalls were attributed through a matched brand and 154 only through the recalling firm. A recall that names brands under two owners counts once for each.
"Brands owned today" is the owner's current portfolio, including brands of controlled subsidiaries.
Owners are never compared across datasets and no combined ranking is given.
What this does not show
Counts reflect each regulator's reporting rules, how many products an owner sells in that country, and how well records could be matched; they do not measure product safety or quality, and a higher count is not a worse owner.
Regulators, countries and product types not listed above are missing, and the window is about three years.
One recall record can cover many products and lots; others cover a single lot. A record is not a unit of harm.
Retailers such as supermarkets appear through own-label products recalled under their name; large owners with many brands have more chances to appear. Rates use today's portfolio, not the portfolio at each recall date.
Matching to brands and companies is incomplete: 94% of archived records are not matched.
