Cargills Food City is Sri Lanka's most extensive modern retail network, which began with a single supermarket opened at Staple Street in Colombo on 26 October 1983 and reached 556 outlets after fifteen new stores in the year to March 2026. It is the only supermarket chain present in all twenty-five districts of the country, and it applies an island-wide single-price policy so that a product costs the same in a remote town as in the capital. Fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood, bought largely through the group's own farmer collection centres, are what the company treats as its point of difference.
