About Netflix

Netflix is the largest subscription streaming service in the world and commissions more original programming than any traditional studio. Its 2023 crackdown on password sharing was widely predicted to cost subscribers and instead added them in large numbers. It began commissioning its own programmes in 2013 when studios started withholding licences, and now spends more on content each year than most film studios earn in revenue.

Netflix began in 1997 posting DVDs in red envelopes and offered to sell itself to Blockbuster for $50 million in 2000, an offer that was declined and is now the standard cautionary tale in business teaching. It killed its own profitable postal business to move to streaming.
