Plantaže was formed in 1963 when agricultural cooperatives from Podgorica, Danilovgrad and Virpazar merged into Agrokombinat 13. Jul, opening its first modern wine cellar at Lješkopolje. Between 1977 and 1982 it carried out what it calls one of Europe's largest viticultural projects of the era, planting more than 2,000 hectares of vineyards and orchards on previously uncultivated land at Ćemovsko polje, now widely described as the largest single-complex vineyard in Europe at over 2,300 hectares. No single shareholder controls the company today: Montenegro's state Investment-Development Fund (22.22 per cent) and Pension Fund (21.49 per cent) are its largest holders, alongside the government directly and private investors, and it trades on the Montenegro Stock Exchange as PLAP. Beyond wine and grape brandy it also grows table grapes and stone fruit, presses olive oil and raises trout.
