About Afterpay
Afterpay splits a purchase into four interest-free instalments and charges the retailer rather than the shopper. Block acquired it in 2022 for about $29 billion in stock, at the peak of interest in buy-now-pay-later before regulators tightened the rules. Block wrote down a large part of the purchase price in the years afterwards as the sector repriced and consumer credit rules tightened around instalment lending.
