About Arcam

Arcam was founded in Cambridge in 1976 as Amplification and Recording Cambridge by John Dawson and the late Chris Evans, who met at the university's tape recording society and set their doctorates aside to develop amplifiers. The A60 integrated amplifier, first built in small numbers for friends, went on to sell in thousands and established the company. Arcam also produced the first domestic add-on digital-to-analogue converter, the Black Box, and the first domestic DAB tuner, the Alpha 10. It still operates from Cambridgeshire, and Dawson still works on its amplifier designs.
