Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) is a publicly listed company headquartered in Mountain View, California, United States that owns 13 consumer brands, and has 4 recorded transactions.[1]
Alphabet was created in 2015 as a holding company above Google, separating the search and advertising business from ventures such as Waymo and Verily. Google itself was founded in 1998 by two Stanford graduate students, and advertising against search results still produces the overwhelming majority of the group's revenue.
Google acquired Fitbit for about $2.1 billion after a review lasting more than a year. The European Commission cleared it only against binding commitments not to use Fitbit health data for advertising and to keep rival wearables working with Android.
Google acquired Nest Labs for $3.2 billion in cash, buying a thermostat company founded by two former Apple engineers. The price startled the industry and marked Google's entry into hardware inside the home.
Google acquired the Israeli navigation app Waze for about $1.1 billion, keeping it as a separate product rather than folding it into Google Maps. Both apps still run side by side more than a decade later.
Google acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock, twenty months after the video site was founded and while it still had no meaningful revenue. The price was widely criticised as reckless at the time.
