Match Group: brands it owns and its ownership tree
Match Group (NASDAQ: MTCH) is a publicly listed company headquartered in Dallas, Texas, United States that owns 6 consumer brands, and has 4 recorded transactions.[1]
Match Group owns most of the large dating apps in the western world, which means the apps people switch between when one is not working generally belong to the same company. It was built inside IAC and fully separated from it in 2020.
Match Group took full ownership of Hinge, having bought a majority the previous year. Hinge had positioned itself explicitly against the swiping model of its new owner's largest brand, and has since grown faster than any other app in the group.
Match Group acquired Plenty of Fish for $575 million in cash. The site had been built and run almost single-handedly by one Vancouver developer, who kept it free and sold advertising while the company that bought it charged subscriptions.
Match took control of Meetic, the largest dating service in continental Europe, through a public tender offer for the French company. It gave the group the European position its American brands had never built, and Meetic still trades under its own name across France, Spain and Italy.
IAC acquired OkCupid for about $50 million and placed it alongside Match.com. OkCupid had built its audience on a long compatibility questionnaire and on a blog that analysed its own users' data, and it was free when Match.com charged a subscription.
