Estée Lauder: brands it owns and its ownership tree
Estée Lauder (NYSE: EL) is a publicly listed company headquartered in New York, United States that owns 13 consumer brands, and has 3 recorded transactions.[1]
The Estée Lauder Companies was founded in New York in 1946 by Estée and Joseph Lauder. It sells prestige beauty through department stores, travel retail and specialty channels, and the Lauder family retains voting control.
Estée Lauder acquired the Tom Ford brand for about $2.8 billion, its largest acquisition, and immediately licensed the fashion and accessories business to Zegna while keeping beauty for itself. The trademark and the clothes therefore have different companies behind them.
Estee Lauder raised its stake in DECIEM, the parent of The Ordinary, to a controlling position in a transaction valuing the business at about $2.2 billion. The Ordinary had built its following by naming active ingredients and their concentrations on the front of the pack at prices far below prestige skincare.
Estee Lauder acquired Too Faced for $1.45 billion, then its largest purchase. Too Faced had been founded by two makeup artists in 1998 and built on playful packaging and product names, with its Better Than Sex mascara among the largest sellers in prestige cosmetics.
