Smartwater is owned by Coca-Cola (the United States, NYSE: KO), which acquired the brand on 7 June 2007.[1][2] Smartwater was founded in 1996 in the United States and was independent until 2007.
Smartwater is vapour-distilled water with added electrolytes, launched in 1996 by Energy Brands and sold on a purity claim, with a bottle designed to look pharmaceutical rather than natural. Coca-Cola acquired it with the Glacéau business in 2007 for $4.1 billion.
Coca-Cola acquired Energy Brands, known as Glacéau, for $4.1 billion in cash, buying vitaminwater and smartwater. It was the company's largest acquisition to that point and a bet that growth would come from outside carbonated drinks.
