About Tide
Tide was the first heavy-duty synthetic laundry detergent, launched in 1946 after Procter & Gamble chemists worked out how to combine a synthetic surfactant with builders that softened water. It transformed washing in hard-water areas and remains the largest detergent brand in North America; P&G sells the related Ariel elsewhere.
