Brandtree

Brands held under licence

188 brands on Brandtree are held under licence rather than owned by the company that sells them, through 188 licences; Inter Parfums holds the most (20). 39 of the 188 licences are for restaurants, hotels and theme parks, which a licensee operates rather than makes.

A licensee has the right to make and sell, or operate, a brand but does not own the name. Brandtree records each such arrangement as a licence link, and the note on the link names the licensor. This page counts those links as of . They are statistics about this dataset, not the whole market: Brandtree records a licence mainly where a brand has a separate territorial record, so it understates how common licensing is, especially for fashion, fragrance and eyewear licences held by companies it does not cover. All statistics.

How this is computed

The population is every verified or reported link whose relationship is licence, on a brand, in force today: 188 links covering 188 brands. A brand licensed to two companies counts once as a brand and twice as a licence. The licensor is read from the link's note, which has the form "the X name is owned by Y". Where Y matches a company on Brandtree by name or alias it is linked (86 licences). Where the note gives a name Brandtree has no company for it is shown as text (71). Where the note says only that another company owns the name, or names no single company, the licence counts in every table except the licensor and pair tables (31). Operated brands are those in restaurants, travel, energy, theme parks and cinemas. Only 88 of the 188 licences have a start date, so this page makes no claim about when licensing began.

The biggest licensees

92 companies hold licences. Inter Parfums holds the most with 20; the ten largest hold 67 of 188 (35.6%). The licensee is the company named on the link, which can itself be a subsidiary of a larger group.

The licensors named

The note names the licensor on 157 of 188 licences (83.5%), covering 118 different licensors. 31 say only that another company owns the name. 86 licences name a licensor that is itself a company on Brandtree, so you can follow the link to see what else it owns. Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Yum! Brands lead; their licences are mostly held by local bottlers, franchisees and distributors who run the name in one territory.

Where licensing is most common

Restaurants & foodservice has the highest licensed share: 23 of 186 brand records (12.4%). Restaurants, hotels, theme parks and cinemas are operated under licence, not made, so a franchisee in that table runs outlets for a name it does not own. Share is licensed brands divided by every brand record in the category, including territorial records that exist because of a licence, so it measures how much of Brandtree's coverage is licensed, not how much of the category is.

Licensor and licensee pairs that recur

13 pairs of a named licensor and a licensee appear on two or more licences, out of 143 distinct pairs. A recurring pair usually means one licensee runs several of a licensor's names, or one name in several places. Pairs with an unnamed licensor are left out, because "another company" would otherwise pair with itself.
